Welcome to our blog, where we will share the journey of our little plot of edible gold, from the beginning and throughout the seasons.
The why,
We as a family love being outdoors, wheather that's visiting different woodlands, walking our dog Bundy, tending to our garden, bbqing whenever possible (aussie husband) , picnics you name it!
We have a lovely garden, it's an OK size and was a complete blank canvas when we moved in, fast forward and its now more established with flower borders and 2 vegetable patches, but we want to be more self sufficient and grow more than our garden can enable us to. So hubby put us down on the wait list for an allotment, thinking we'd be on there for years.
As I'm sure many families/individuals can relate to, 2023 was a tough year, personally for us it was the toughest financially of our 10 years together what with bills rising, food costs and fuel on a constant up and only 1 main income we were consumed by the squeeze and never ending pressures, watching our savings slowly being gobbled up, kindly our car decided it would throw in another kerb ball by dying an unfixable death, so new car (new to us not litral) and expensive visa cost later and its fair to say our resources were looking pretty slender.
So we sat down, heads together, and came up with a plan for 2024. This included laboriously listing all our outgoings vs income and seeing where we could make savings and most importantly for us how we could plump our savings up again. From the new year I'm working more which is helping and will continue to help, we have budgeted and now have our savings goal for the year. This comes with sacrifice, no holidays this year, limiting days out in school holidays, focusing more on things we can do for free rather than things which cost money, whilst still ensuring our chirldren are not "missing out". Then we received an email to say a plot had become available and was ours if we wanted it. This allotment, our plot of gold, came to us at the best time. It now provides us with a large outdoor space an extended garden if you will, where we can spend quality time as a family together. It gives us a base, somewhere we can create moments that become memories. This allotment is an extending arm that reached out to us when we needed it most. Its given us a filler for which to enjoy the seasons, a tiny cost which in return will sow huge benefits and not just the eating kind. Look and find your silver lining, this is most definitely ours.
